Honoring Our History, Building Our Future

Pride Month is a time for a global celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community. Taking place every June, it dates back to the Stonewall uprising in New York City in June 1969. Throughout history, LGBTQIA+ individuals have always been here, contributing to society, pushing boundaries, and creating change.

This year, Discord’s Pride ERG’s theme for the month is “We Will A L W A Y S Be Here.” Our theme celebrates the unwavering spirit of the LGBTQIA+ community. It reflects both the rich history and a vibrant future for LGBTQIA+ communities — we counter the misconception that the community is a modern invention, and instead emphasize the deep and enduring presence of LGBTQIA+ individuals throughout history.

Hear from some of our Pride ERG leads and ERG members on what Pride month means to them and what they hope others experience this month.

ERG Lead (He/Him)

For me, Pride Month was something I'd look forward to every year since I came out. While it was always a month of celebration, it's also always been a reminder for me of the privilege I hold, and the work people like Marsha P. Johnson did to give me the life I'm able to live today.

It's a reminder to continue fighting, to continue speaking up and using my voice, and to remember those who came before me who were brave enough to risk everything for this fight. Pride Month for me is a month of gratitude.

ERG Member (She/They)

For me, Pride month represents a time to celebrate the intersectionality of my Identities. It provides a unique space for me and allows me to be proud of how I show up in this world.

ERG Lead (Any/All)

Our community's history is deep, long, and rich. There's so much we aren't taught, so much we're told to forget, to ignore. But the truth is that we have always been here, since the dawn of civilization, we have been here.

I hope that we can start dismantling the idea that queer folk, trans folk, and gay folk are an invention of modern civilization. You can find our roots as far back as ancient Sumer in the 25th Century BCE. In every civilization, in every content, in every page of history, we are there. Whether seen or not, we are there. That's what I hope folks learn this Pride.

In honor of Pride month, Discord will be donating to the Transgender Law Center, the largest national trans-led organization advocating for the self-determination of all people. We have always, and will continue to, stand in solidarity with our employees on issues of equality impacting the Queer and Trans communities. We will also match all employee donations to the Transgender Law Center.

We encourage everyone to identify organizations that stand with, advocate for, and support the LGBTQIA+ community this month and year-round.

Whether you're a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally, we'd love to have you with us — check our jobs board for opportunities to join the team! We’re always looking for talented folks across a variety of teams. And no matter where you land in Discord, you’re more than welcome to join the Pride ERG.
